Independence Plus Takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
On behalf of all of our Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients—past and present—and in response to a challenge from our dear Trissa, Independence Plus’s administrative team took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge last Friday.

Our Top 10 List of Books
Our commitment to learning is supported by a love of books, small on-site library, and responsibility to understand and provide quality services to our patients and their families. Find out which books made our list!

Watch Trissa’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Trissa, who turns 11 in a couple of weeks, is bright, spirited, and wise beyond her years. For her birthday this year—and as a prelude to surgery—Trissa chose to donate some of her birthday funds to the ALS Foundation. Watch Trissa’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video and hear her important message—it blew us away!

Be Prepared for Severe Weather
In honor of National Preparedness Month, we developed tips to address severe weather emergency situations most frequently encountered by our ventilator-dependent patients and their family members. These tips should be used in the home to prepare for a tornado, hurricane, fire, flood, earthquake, or snowstorm.

YouTube Helps Re-Educate Nurses!
Technology is part of almost everything we do, and it’s connecting our world in ways we never imagined. We recently created educational videos featuring our very own nurses! We’re using these new videos to reinforce the essential skills our nurses need, which are reviewed and demonstrated during our pre-employment and home ventilator training classes.

A Special Thank You on Labor Day!
This Labor Day, we want to recognize all of our people—nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, speech pathologists, and also our administrative team—for their hard work and dedication to our patients. On behalf of Independence Plus—and all of our patients—we sincerely thank you and appreciate you.

Back to School: Individualized Education Programs
Many of our ventilator-dependent patients attend school. With a little extra planning and preparation, education at all levels is possible. Not only does it help maximize each childs’ potential but also their ability to live an independent and more fulfilled life. For parents of children with special needs, back to school may mean reviewing or initiating their child’s Individualized Educational Program (IEP).

Life after a Spinal Cord Injury
It’s easy to feel comfortable around JJ. He’s easy to talk to—and has a great sense of humor. In 2007, JJ suffered a complete spinal cord injury when he fell from a roof while working as a carpenter. He is living proof that life doesn’t have to stop with a spinal cord injury.

Strike out ALS: The Ice Bucket Challenge
Before joining Independence Plus, I didn’t know much about ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Like so many, my limited knowledge was associated with baseball legend, Lou Gehrig. Today is a much different story. Watch me take the Ice Bucket Challenge to spread awareness of ALS!

Setting the Standard for Healthcare at Home
When our medically fragile, technology-dependent patients come home from a facility, it may be their first day home in weeks, months, and sometimes, even years. Our mission at Independence Plus is to set the standard for healthcare at home. This means keeping our patients healthy at home, so they can live normal, meaningful lives surrounded by the people they love.

Connecting with Our Patients
Our Scheduling and Recruiting team is getting to know our patients on a deeper level—in-person and at home. And it’s helping them (and more importantly, our patients!) in ways we never imagined.

The Golden Rule of Nursing
Mindy, LPN, has touched the lives of many of our patients and families. Of course, Mindy quickly corrected this statement with, “I think it’s the other way around—they’ve touched my life!” A wife and mother of three, Mindy is kind, compassionate and willing to do whatever it takes for her patients—and Independence Plus.
