Lauren’s Dream Comes True!

Our People

Lauren is celebrating with her friends, family and nurses this week!

On Tuesday, Lauren (age 19), appeared on WGN News in a special segment called “Mr. Brightside,” which features people in the community who are doing great things.

Lauren is an incredible young woman who is doing her part to give back to her community—and make the world a better place.

“So many people have helped me in my life, and I want to do the same. One of my dreams in life is to start a music business for people with special needs—just like me!” Lauren explains in the video.

Lauren suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a neuromuscular disease that causes severe muscle weakness and requires her dependence on mechanical ventilation.

Dream to Attend College

Lauren was planning to attend college this fall, but her dream was put on hold because she needed a special wheelchair-accessible van to attend class.

A few months ago, Lauren and her dad started a GoFundMe account to raise money for the wheelchair-accessible van, which can cost up to $50,000.00. Since the video aired on Tuesday, Lauren’s community has raised more than $57,000.00—exceeding her original goal!

We talked to Lauren two days after the video aired and here’s what she had to say: “The last couple of days have been awesome!” She continues: “Dad and I are so grateful for all the donations. God is good! I can’t wait to start the next chapter in my life!”

This month marks one year since Lauren has been home with 24/7 skilled hourly home nursing care. To read more about Lauren’s homecoming, click here.

We are overjoyed for Lauren—and look forward to seeing how this generosity opens up her future and allows her to accomplish her dreams!
